Fresh off the easel: Snow on the Mountains painting on plexiglass

Cosmic-Mountains.jpg

This just in: “Snow on the Mountains” was created by painting on the back of plexiglass. Painting on Plexiglass offers less control, and a more organic look. It can be challenging because you must paint a painting in reverse, beginning with the highlights. But Plexiglass is a favorite surface for me because you get some really interesting effects with depth. I often will layer panels to achieve the right depth of background, as you can see in my photo below. Sometimes I’ll layer multiple panels together as one piece, which really adds a more 3-dimensional look.

If you look closely at the photo above, you can see my reflection in the sky. Photographing artwork with a reflective surface can be a challenge, but worth the risk!

Public Art Proposal: Jungle

I am honored to be a finalist for two public art commissions, both in public schools in Washington DC. This means out of over 400 applicants, my work will be carefully reviewed and considered among the work of three other finalists for each project. My first proposal was for a mural, themed: jungle. In this proposal, I wanted to to create a space to explore and be inspired, and to evoke wonder and joy for all ages, for years to come.

The second submission will consist of four mosaic entry signs, themed: seasons. Stay tuned!

"Shoreline" Process Video

IMG_3300.jpg

“Shoreline” is an acrylic painting on canvas measuring 12”x12”. I was inspired to create this paining from photographs I took on a road trip from New Hampshire to Ontario. The reference photos were taken somewhere in upstate New York. You’ll notice how many layers are needed in the sky, and how much adjusting of color was needed in the middle-ground. Enjoy the video:
